Hi! I'm Stelios Pantazis. I'm a doctor and I specialize in medical nutrition and metabolic disorders. Today, I'd like to present a video, added to our regular schedule, which is every Sunday at 19:00, in order to present something significant about the COVID-19 pandemic, which has made our lives difficult over the last year. Just a few hours ago, a wide analysis of all studies was published concerning the effect of proton-pump inhibitors, which is a class of drugs systematically used by a very large part of the population in Greece and globally and which significantly increases the risk of dying from COVID-19. I've been studying the scientific data for many months, because the first data were published already in March and accumulated over the following months, but now all the data have been analysed and it's become certain that there is a significant risk. The drugs involved reduce the stomach acids and are widely used in conditions such as gastritis, esophagitis, indigestion, ulcer and reflux. If you take drugs for any of these conditions, you're very likely to be taking these ones. They are often administered to protect the stomach to people taking drugs for a long period of time, such as drugs for heart disease, arthritis or other conditions. The most common ones are Nexium, Losec, Laprazol, Controloc, Pariet, Pantium etc. The analysis published just a few hours ago was based on studies carried out on a sample of 37,000 patients, and it showed that people taking these drugs are 46% more likely to suffer from severe COVID-19 infection or die. Therefore, there is a great risk and much attention should be paid to it. Let me note that these drugs have been studied from the beginning of the pandemic, because it had already been found that people taking them suffer from respiratory infections more often and their infection is more severe and deadly more often. The problem was not discovered with COVID-19, but it was confirmed that the risk increases with COVID-19 too. What changes significantly now is that we're facing a pandemic that threatens our health and the health of our loved ones, and we should evaluate some things differently. What should you do? First of all, if you use drugs of this class to protect your stomach, you should contact your doctor and confirm if the risk of exposure in the light of the pandemic is justified in relation to the protection you get from the drugs. In plain words, if it's worth taking these drugs, even when you know this new fact. With the help of your doctor, you may find another drug offering satisfactory protection without the additional risk of COVID-19. In the study, the researchers suggest the change of medication in some cases into H2 blockers, and specifically into drugs with the active ingredient famotidine. If you take drugs to treat symptoms of reflux, gastritis, ulcer or other conditions of the digestive system, you should find alternative methods of treatment, such as a healthy diet and weight loss. It's a shame taking a drug that increases the risk of severe COVID-19 infection only to eat foods that are bad for your health. Thank you very much for your attention and interest! On Sunday, at 19:00, we're returning to our regular schedule with a very significant subject: The dietary supplements that help with dementia. Thank you very much!
