Hi! I'm Stelios Pantazis. I'm a doctor and I specialize in medical nutrition and metabolic disorders. Today, I'd like to warn you about the foods you should avoid if your joints hurt. This study concerns osteoarthritis, namely the pain that occurs in the joints over the years. It has been estimated that approximately half the people over 60 often complain about pain in the joints or have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis. If your joints hurt or you've been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, it's important that you avoid these foods, because studies have shown that pain reduces this way. In fact, there are very significant results that show that these foods accelerate the destruction of the joints. Therefore, it's really important that you avoid them if you want to protect your joints and not be in pain. This video is based on a study that was published in 2020, and it monitored 2,757 participants for six years. I'll present the foods in order of harmfulness, starting from the least harmful ones. Namely, the last foods of the list are the most harmful to your joints. Let's see them. Full-fat dairy. Much has been said about whether dairy is healthy or not. It seems that the answer is it depends. The study does not clarify if limited-fat dairy causes health problems or not. Therefore, it's not clear if you can consume it or not. However, with regard to osteoarthritis, if you suffer from it, you'd better avoid at least full-fat dairy. Ready-made sauces. Ready-made sauces contain many fats that often come from low-quality oils that have often been processed. Light sauces with tomato, lemon, vinegar and olive oil are your only choice if you want to protect your joints. Sweets. Sweets contain many ingredients that we all know we should consume moderately. Unfortunately, when they coexist in large quantities, it's unsurprising that they're harmful for our health and joints. Snacks. In the study, the term "snack" includes all dietary garbage that you can find in bags and you should hardly ever eat, such as chips, crackers, salty snacks, etc. Among the many damages they cause to our body, they contribute to the destruction of our joints. Eggs. Eggs remain a controversial food. Many studies claim that they're not harmful, some other studies claim that they are, while some studies even claim that they're healthy. Depending on what we measure each time, or how consumption is defined or what their framework of consumption is, the results vary. Anyway, if the health of your joints is important to you, you'd better limit or even quit their consumption. Sugary soft drinks. Another ingredient of the diet that should be absent from it is soft drinks. There's no study that fails to stress how important it is to avoid them for any health problem you want to prevent. If you love your joints, stay away from them. Margarine. Margarine, which unfortunately some still claim is healthy, or at least not really unhealthy, is a bad idea if you want to protect your joints. In the category of fats and oils, olive oil is the obvious choice. It's impressive that we've already talked about many harmful foods and we're still halfway. Pizza. I can't understand why in such type of studies pizza is examined separately, since most of its ingredients are harmful. It's no surprise that pizza itself is harmful for you joints. It's obvious. Poultry. You may be shocked by the fact that poultry, namely chicken and turkey, are more harmful for your joints than pizza. But that's what this study showed. I could say that even though I don't like chicken much, I was shocked to find that it is considered worse for the joints than pizza, soft drinks and sweets. But that's what the researchers of this study concluded, so that's what I'm telling you. It seems that chicken destroys your joints too. Much, as it seems. Red meat. The meat of mammals, which means pork and beef in practice, because in the US, where the study was carried out, they hardly ever consume lamb, so researchers often record it as red meat, significantly affects your joints. It's impressive that it is more harmful for your joints than pizza, soft drinks and sugar, which means that animal protein doesn't fit with our joints. Alternatively, the high-quality protein of legumes seems to be the best choice. Processed cereals. Even worse than red meat and all the harmful foods we've mentioned so far are processed cereals. In practice, this means pastry and pasta from white flour. Processed meats. Charcuterie are close to the top of our list as one of the worse foods someone suffering from osteoarthritis can consume. Processed meats or charcuterie are the second worst thing you could eat to destroy your joints. Let's go to number one. French fries. Although potatoes don't damage our joints in any way, French fries manage to cause the biggest damage to your joints than any other food. This has to do with frying, which transforms an innocent food into something really toxic for our joints. You'd better never eat them.
