Hi! I'm Stelios Pantazis. I'm a doctor and I specialize in medical nutrition and metabolic disorders. Today, I'm presenting a video added to our regular schedule on the effect of spicy foods on our heart's health and their benefits against cancer. The data come from a study that has been recently published at an American Cardiology Conference, although they haven't been published in any medical journal yet. Many studies have shown that chili peppers are very rich in anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer substances. The main substance responsible for all these is the subtance causing this pleasant burn called capsaicin. The study gathered the results of other studies and attempted to examine the effect of the consumption of spicy foods on the heart's health and the prevention of cancer. The data come from epidemiological studies. In plain words, they ask the participants how often they eat spicy foods and then they observe them for many years and record if there are any differences in the onset of some illnesses. These studies are rather important, but they're not definite. However, given that we don't believe that chili peppers may cause any serious problem, it's not a bad idea to add chili peppers and pepper to your diet, if the burn doesn't particularly annoy you. The study concluded that the persons consuming spicy foods often compared to the persons that said they don't consume any suffer from 26% fewer heart problems, run a decreased risk of dying from cancer by 23%, and their mortality is decreased by 25%, which means the chances of death due to any reason. The results are very interesting and I believe it's a very good idea to add spicy foods to your diet. Although we don't usually eat spicy foods in Greece, I love them and I add pepper to many dishes, such as legumes, soup and almost everything, even to salads sometimes. Such studies confirm my love for spicy foods. I recommend that you try them, if you haven't done so already. Thank you very much!
